Peso Pluma Faces Threats from Jalisco New Generation Cartel

1 min read

Peso Pluma, a rising star in the music industry, recently faced a chilling threat from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The threat was made public when a banner was discovered in Tijuana. The ominous message warned Peso Pluma to refrain from presenting himself at his scheduled concert on October 14, with dire consequences promised for his “disrespect and loose tongue.”

While Peso Pluma didn’t win any of the three awards he was nominated for at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, his focus has understandably shifted to this serious matter. Consequently, his concert at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, slated for Thursday, September 14, was postponed “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

The artist, whose real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, was born near Guadalajara, Mexico, but spent his formative years in San Antonio, Texas, and New York, New York. His stage name, “Peso Pluma,” translates to “featherweight,” inspired by the legendary Mexican boxer Marco Antonio Barrera due to his lean physique.

Peso Pluma‘s music career has seen impressive success, with his July album, Genesis, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and spending 11 weeks on the chart so far. He has achieved 21 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including “Ella Baila Sola,” which reached a peak of No. 4.

In an interview, Peso Pluma expressed his pride in being Mexican and promoting Mexican music globally. He noted how Mexican music, particularly corridos, has gained popularity even among those who were previously unfamiliar with it. He emphasized the global appeal of Mexican music.

Moreover, Peso Pluma’s Genesis album broke records by amassing 101.8 million streams during the charting week of July 8. This achievement marked the largest streaming week ever for a regional Mexican album, surpassing global superstar Bad Bunny, who had held the record since May 2022 with 24 songs on the Hot Latin Songs chart simultaneously.

Despite the threat he faces, Peso Pluma’s influence on the music industry and his dedication to Mexican music are undeniable, and his fans eagerly await further developments in his career.
