With Daddy Yankee announcing his retirement, there’s been a lot of buzz on who will be his successor as the king of reggaeton. The Puerto Rican rapper and singer has ruled the urban music industry for almost three decades with songs like “Gasolina,” “Lo Que Pasó, Pasó,” “”¿Qué Tengo Que Hacer?” “Con Calma,” “Despacito,” and more.

Daddy Yankee is currently on his La Última Vuelta World Tour,  which  is the eighth and farewell concert tour. In March, El Rey shocked fans, telling them with a video via his social platforms that he is retiring after a 32-year career. The news left millions of followers all over the world heartbroken.

In the three minute clip, Yankee said, “I finally see the goal and now I am going to enjoy what they have given me. They say that I made this genre worldwide, but you made it the biggest in the world (…). I have always worked not to let them down, with a lot of discipline to be able to inspire all the kids to be leaders, to dream of growing up and not think about limitations, and to work for their family and their loved ones.”

The global superstar began his career in the early 90s, by the end of that decade he formed a duo with Nicky Jam, without either of them leaving aside their solo careers.  Since then, his fame has grown even more and he has become a benchmark for the urban genre, which to this day is a phenomenon. After his milestone achievements, awards, and recognitions, he decided that it’s time to say goodbye to music with the album Legendary and La Última Vuelta World Tour.

In a recent interview, he was asked whether Bad Bunny could be the rightful successor and be crowned as the new “Rey del Reggaetón,” Yankee replied, “Bad Bunny is excellent. What I mean, he’s a tremendous artist, a superstar; I would love it, there is no better person to take that position.” He also praised the  “Tití me pregunta” singer’s work ethic and character, “What I like about Bad is that he has never been selfish and that’s a good attribute, I see him as a good leader.”
