Taika Waititi, the film’s writer and director, teases that the title Thor: Love and Thunder could have multiple meanings.
Following the success of his 2017 hit Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi returns to direct the upcoming fourth standalone Thor film, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his starring role. Thor: Love and Thunder picks up immediately after the events of Avengers: Endgame, with Thor assembling a formidable team of heroes to defeat Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who is attempting to wipe out all remaining gods.
The film’s trailers have hinted that Thor is having an existential crisis this time around, with the character struggling to find his place in the universe. The return of Natalie Portman’s character adds to Thor’s inner turmoil.
Waititi teases that the title of Thor: Love and Thunder may have multiple meanings in a recent interview with Fandango. He jokes that, while some plot points are obvious from the inclusion of the words “Love and Thunder,” fans should not make any assumptions. Waititi’s comment about what the title could mean is below. Thor: Love and Thunder trailers have teased that love will play an important role in the film, with Thor navigating not only the return of his ex-girlfriend, but also a more platonic form of love with Valkyrie and the Guardians of the Galaxy. While the inclusion of “Thunder” in the title is less obvious, it may allude to Thor’s struggles with his God of Thunder powers and his relationship with Odin.
