What, in my opinion, makes “About Damn Time” a winner? There’s some kickass production (Blake Slatkin and Ricky Reed) with rhythm guitar, a powerful bassline, and a terrific groove.
The record has a vintage feel to it, like old-school R&B. This setting is ideal for Lizzo, who exudes confidence from the start. I like the attitude she adds to the song, as well as the soaring vocals. The chorus is extremely infectious, with the title lyric “It’s about damn time” leading the way. Woo! In the second stanza, I enjoy how she shifts to rapping. This creates a nice contrast. Additionally, the bridge/outro (“I’m coming out tonight” with its “oohs”) is a blast.
