Brighton-based indie pop artist Bess Atwell unveils a shimmering new single, “Release Myself,” alongside the announcement of her upcoming album Light Sleeper. Produced by Aaron Dessner of The National, Light Sleeper is set to release on May 24th, 2024, via Real Kind Records.
Featuring additional instrumentation from renowned musicians like James Krivchenia of Big Thief, Ben Lanz of Beirut, and James McAlister, known for his collaborations with Sufjan Stevens, the album comprises 10 tracks that radiate with warmth and introspection.
In discussing the album, Bess shares, “Light Sleeper is about the willingness to feel. While writing the album, I was realizing that somewhere along the line I had become very afraid of feeling. The record is about facing this realization and finding the bravery to challenge it.”
The album’s lead single, “Release Myself,” premiered on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show, introducing listeners to a track brimming with fuzzy guitars and euphoric melodies. Bess explains, “There are always a couple of songs on a record that just sort of fall out of you and this was one of them. This was the first time I’ve managed to write about my panic disorder without slipping too far into sorry-for-myself or cheesy, faux-empowering territory.”
Fresh off supporting Ed Sheeran at the Royal Albert Hall, Bess Atwell is set to embark on a series of intimate live shows in June, including a sold-out performance at London’s Union Chapel. She will also join The National for support slots in June and July and embark on a UK headline tour in October, culminating in a performance at London’s KOKO in February 2025.
Don’t miss the chance to experience Bess Atwell’s captivating performances and the poignant storytelling of her upcoming album, Light Sleeper.
