Brittany Howard, widely recognized for her exceptional vocal prowess as part of Alabama Shakes, embarked on her solo journey in 2019 with her debut solo album, Jaime. Now, four years later, she’s back with the announcement of her sophomore album, What Now, along with the release of its title track.

While the album’s official release date remains undisclosed, the title track, “What Now,” is now available. This funky, rhythmic rocker exudes a strong groove. Speaking about the song, Howard describes it as “maybe the truest and bluest of all the songs. It’s never my design to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I needed to say what was on my mind without editing myself. I like how it’s a song that makes you want to dance, but at the same time, the lyrics are brutal.“
A press release characterizes the album as “endlessly unpredictable,” showcasing the artist’s unique musicality within a shape-shifting sound that encompasses elements from psychedelia and dance music to dream-pop and avant-jazz. The album explores the concept of “retro future afroism.”
