Lilith Merlot, the Dutch singer-songwriter, unveiled her much-anticipated sophomore EP titled ‘Shades Of Blue’ on May 26, 2023. This is her first project in six years following her 2017 self-titled debut EP. The recording process took place at the Black Oak studio in Hellevoetsluis, Netherlands, under the expert guidance of producer Serge Dusault.
In ‘Shades Of Blue’, Lilith delves into the multifaceted symbolism of the color blue, weaving her personal narrative with universally relatable themes. The creation of this EP was driven by a deeply personal and painful breakup. Lilith channelled her emotional turmoil into her songwriting, using the EP as a diary of her experiences and emotions. This introspective approach adds a layer of vulnerability and authenticity to the songs, making them particularly resonant with listeners.
Speaking about the EP, Lilith Merlot revealed, “Some of the piano ballads on this EP are quite vulnerable, but you can clearly hear a shift to a lighter shade of blue toward the end.” The song ‘White Lies’ embodies this transition, with lyrics expressing resilience and self-empowerment. Reflecting on the journey of creating this EP, Lilith shared, “Writing this EP was like writing a diary, and recording it all has been like therapy. These songs expose some of my darkest and ‘bluest’ moments of the past year. But the last two songs on this EP show that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, and even the darkest of blues will eventually pass.” This sentiment further emphasizes the emotive depth and personal growth encapsulated in ‘Shades Of Blue’.
