Max Frost, the Austin-born, Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, has unveiled “Car Stereo,” the first single from his upcoming album, Shelby Ave, due out February 21, 2025. Known for his genre-blending style and inventive songwriting, Frost’s latest project marks a fresh chapter in his career, focusing on simplicity and emotional authenticity.
Shelby Ave was conceived in a house on the street of the same name in Nashville, where Frost collaborated closely with producer Luke Niccoli, known for his work with artists like Joji, Keith Urban, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Together, they sought to strip down the music to its essentials, allowing the raw beauty of each track to shine. Frost reflects, “I’ve simplified my life in a way that has made creativity more accessible. Music feels like a hobby again, which has opened new paths for me artistically.”
The album’s lead single, “Car Stereo,” captures a moment of vulnerability, written the day after a breakup. Melding cinematic strings with an indie rock undertone, the song serves as a poignant farewell, with Frost describing it as a “parting gift” that encapsulates the last remnants of a past relationship. “It’s like, ‘Here’s the last piece of me that you can have and play in your stereo, if you want,’” he shares, highlighting the track’s personal resonance.
Frost’s journey as an artist began at eight years old when he first picked up a guitar, eventually leading to viral singles like “White Lies” and “Adderall.” These early successes paved the way for his debut album, Gold Rush, released in 2018, featuring the breakout track “Good Morning.” The song garnered significant attention, landing in sync placements for brands and shows like Pepsi, ESPN, Grey’s Anatomy, and American Idol.
Throughout his career, Frost has shared stages with a wide array of artists, including Fitz and The Tantrums, Panic! At The Disco, and Twenty One Pilots. His dynamic live performances and appearances on shows like Good Morning America have reinforced his reputation as a versatile performer. He’s also collaborated with legendary artists such as Sir Elton John, adding to his distinct musical perspective.
In recent years, Frost has found a new creative outlet on TikTok, where his genre-crossing mashups have gained a large following. His popularity on the platform underscores his adaptability and knack for connecting with audiences across mediums. Following his 2022 Flying Machines EP, which received acclaim from outlets like Atwood Magazine and American Songwriter, Frost relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville. Embracing the slower pace of his new home, he’s been able to refocus on making music that feels true to his artistic vision.
With Shelby Ave, Frost continues to evolve, unbound by genre constraints and driven by his dedication to honest storytelling. As he prepares for the album’s release and an anticipated 2025 headline tour, “Car Stereo” sets the stage for a collection of songs that promise to resonate deeply with fans.
