Your series, ‘BigMan’s Party,’ has been creating quite a buzz. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this project and what sets it apart from other house party experiences?
The inspiration behind ‘BigMan’s Party’ is the Lagos nightlife, you see DJs spin seamless tracks, old classics mingled with the freshest hits and the way the people are dressed up, it gives the urban street and classy vibes.
As the official DJ for YBNL Nation and an influential figure in afrobeats, how have you seen the genre evolve over the years, and what role do you believe ‘BigMan’s Party’ played in this evolution?
Over the years, Afrobeats has been topping charts and for real, we are doing great. We are still pushing the narrative and that’s what ‘BigMan’s Party’ is here to do.
Your track “Diet” featuring Tiwa Savage and “Send Her Money” with Kizz Daniel have been huge hits. What was the creative process behind these collaborations, and how did you choose the artists you worked with?
Haha, the “Diet” session was an unexpected one, we didn’t even know how we all ended up making that hit. Shoutout to Reminisce, Sarz and Slimcase, we were just vibing in a room before the Queen came in, and she was like ‘nah nah I have to be on this record’, and I was like ‘ok this is getting interesting’ and then boom ‘Diet’ was born. ‘Send Her Money’ was a finished project before my brother played it for me, and I loved it immediately when I heard it. We shot a video and boom!!! Beautiful song…
You have a diverse skill set as a DJ, producer, songwriter, and A&R. How do you balance these different roles, and do you find that one role influences the others in your work?
Balancing these roles is definitely a challenge, but I see them as interconnected parts of the same creative process. Being a DJ helps me stay in touch with what people want to hear, what works on the dance floor, and what’s trending in different genres. That influences my production and songwriting because it gives me a direct understanding of the audience’s pulse.
Your influence as an A&R has been pivotal in launching the careers of artists like Fireboy DML and Asake. What qualities do you look for in emerging talent, and how do you support their development?
Authenticity, adaptability, drive, and passion are some of the key qualities to look for in a talent. You know, once you are original and have what it takes.
You’ve collaborated with global brands like Johnnie Walker and Goldberg. How do these partnerships align with your artistic vision, and what do they add to your brand?
Collaborating with global brands like Johnnie Walker and Goldberg has been a natural alignment with my artistic vision as a DJ. These collaborations not only elevate my brand by connecting me with a wider audience, but they also offer opportunities to explore new dimensions of creativity.
How do you manage to stay at the forefront of multiple genres such as afrobeats, amapiano, hip-hop, house music, and EDM? What drives your versatility and innovation in music?
You know, being able to multitask these genres requires genuine passion for music. The only thing that drives my versatility is an open minded approach to music. I don’t see genres as boundaries but as opportunities to explore new creative expressions. I experiment with blending sounds, drawing inspiration from different cultures which pushes me to innovate and create something fresh.
You’ve received accolades from industry legends and awards such as the City People Award. How do these recognitions impact your work and motivation?
It’s incredibly humbling to be acknowledged by respected figures and platforms, and it reinforces my commitment to pushing boundaries and continuing to evolve as an artist/DJ.
For aspiring DJs and producers looking up to you, what advice would you give them to succeed in the competitive music industry?
Consistency is key. Success doesn’t happen overnight, so be prepared to put in the work, stay patient, and continuously improve your craft.
Can you tell us about any upcoming releases or projects that fans should be on the lookout for?
