Alt-pop singer-songwriter and pianist Genevieve Stokes has officially released her highly anticipated debut album, ‘With A Lightning Strike’, via Atlantic Records. Known for her introspective lyricism and unique vocal tone, Stokes has already gained considerable attention with over 1.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify. One of the album’s standout tracks, “Mean Guy,” which she teased on TikTok, has quickly become a fan favorite, racking up more than 6.3 million views. The song’s official visual is also available to watch now.
‘With A Lightning Strike’ was co-produced by Tony Berg, whose past work includes collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers and Paul McCartney. The album takes a darker, more reflective turn compared to Stokes’ earlier releases, as she explores the complexities of growing up and searching for childhood wonder. Much of the album was recorded in her hometown of Portland, Maine, a place Stokes returned to for inspiration and vibrancy after time in Los Angeles. Stokes worked closely with drummer Fiona Stocks-Lyons and music director Pete Cafarella, who contributed synth and bass elements, further enriching the sound.
The album was first introduced earlier this year with the single “Dreamer,” a track praised by Rolling Stone and PAPER, which both highlighted its ’70s-inspired pop elements. Stokes’ earthy voice complements the nostalgic production, capturing the bittersweet end of summer in the accompanying music video. Other notable tracks on the album include “Desert Eagle,” “Amusing,” and the emotionally heavy “God,” which Stokes has described as her reckoning with the “meaninglessness of life.”
Alongside the digital release, ‘With A Lightning Strike’ is getting a special vinyl treatment. Atlantic Records and Record Store Day have partnered to offer a limited-edition vinyl as part of RSD x Atlantic’s New Artist Series, which will be available in select independent record stores across North America. Stokes is also embarking on a tour of North America in support of the album, starting on October 14 in Washington, DC, and concluding on November 7 in Los Angeles. She’ll be joined by fellow musician Lily Kershaw for the tour, which includes stops at iconic venues like the Troubadour in West Hollywood.
Fans will also have the opportunity to meet Stokes and get signed copies of the album at various independent record stores along the tour route. Stops include Bull Moose in Portland, Maine, and Reckless Records in Chicago.
In her own words, Stokes shared, “After over a year of writing songs in my parents’ garage and recording out of airbnbs with my friends, this album is finally yours. ‘With A Lightning Strike’ reflects so many experiences and phases of my life, and for the first time, my sound and vision feel entirely true to me.”
