Rising queer pop artist Zolita unveils “Grown Up,” a raw and powerful track from her upcoming album Queen of Hearts, due out May 31st via AWAL.
The song confronts a past relationship, Zolita singing with growing intensity, “I don’t get how you were having fun, I was way too young.” The accompanying music video weaves together home videos from her childhood with footage from her late teens in New York City, when the events of the song unfolded.
“Grown Up’ is about a past relationship that I’ve only recently been able to process,” explains Zolita. “It’s a situation many young people experience, and I hope sharing my story helps others feel seen and understood.”
Queen of Hearts explores two distinct themes. One half is a vibrant celebration of queer identity, while the other delves into the complexities of growing up. The album marks a turning point for Zolita, showcasing a new level of vulnerability and honesty in her songwriting.
“There are things I’ve never written about before, things I was maybe a little afraid to explore,” she says.
This vulnerability extends to her live performances. Zolita embarks on a major US tour this fall, kicking off on September 13th. The tour includes stops at renowned venues like New York’s Bowery Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Troubadour.
A multi-talented artist, Zolita’s background in music and film informs her captivating music videos. From directing to editing, she takes complete creative control, resulting in visually striking narratives that complement her music. Her 2021 viral trilogy ā “Somebody I Fcked Once,” “Single In September,” and “I Fcking Love You” ā garnered over 85 million global streams on YouTube alone.
Zolita’s artistry extends beyond catchy hooks and relatable lyrics. Her music videos are vibrant cinematic experiences, earning her praise from tastemakers like i-D, V Magazine, and NYLON. Queen of Hearts promises to be a powerful and multifaceted project, solidifying Zolita’s place as a rising star in the pop landscape.
