Oklahoma City-based band Ben Quad has released their highly anticipated EP, Ephemera, via Pure Noise Records. The EP, which is available for streaming and on vinyl, marks a significant shift in the band’s sound, showcasing a heavier, more aggressive style compared to their previous work. With powerful themes and sonic influences from legendary screamo and post-hardcore bands, Ephemera is a reflection of societal frustration and personal exploration.
The EP opens with the hard-hitting track “I Did Not Create The Rules,” featuring heavy riffs and potent lyrics. The first line, “It’ll be like this forever…” sets the tone for the record’s overarching conflict: survival in a system of late-stage capitalism. Ben Quad shared insight into the meaning behind the song, explaining, “We are forced to survive in the constant hell cycle that is late-stage capitalism. The record as a whole is an exploration of transience.” The track’s sharp critique of societal stagnation echoes the band’s frustration with the status quo, as they call for change and a rejection of modern systems.
Ephemera continues to build on this message with previously released singles such as “Your Face As An Effigy,” a Deafheaven-inspired track, and “You’ll Get Nothing And Like It,” a cathartic release of anger and emotion. The EP’s title track, “Ephemera,” further emphasizes the band’s themes of societal decay and personal growth, with each song weaving together a powerful narrative.
The band’s influences are clear throughout the EP, drawing from bands like William Bonney, Pg. 99, and Underoath. Their shift toward a heavier and more aggressive sound marks a moment of transformation from their 2022 release, I’m Scared That’s All There Is. While still retaining elements of their previous style, Ben Quad has evolved, blending personal reflection with astute social commentary to devastating effect.
Produced by CJ Cochran from Outline In Color, the EP’s recording process was interrupted by the band’s tour schedule, which allowed for additional contemplation and refinement. The result is a cohesive collection of songs that balance personal struggles with broader political issues, offering both emotional intensity and intellectual depth.
Ben Quad’s latest releases have garnered attention from notable outlets like UPROXX, Brooklyn Vegan, and New Noise Magazine, further solidifying their place in the modern punk scene. The band is currently on tour, supporting Prince Daddy & the Hyena for three more shows before embarking on the Pure Noise Tour with Microwave, Prince Daddy & the Hyena, and Just Friends. The tour kicks off on October 29 at Iron City in Birmingham, Alabama, and the band has also announced headlining shows in December with support from TRSH and Summerbruise.
With Ephemera, Ben Quad delivers a bold, politically charged collection of songs that showcase their growth as a band and their commitment to pushing sonic and lyrical boundaries.
