MGMT, the dynamic duo of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, has dropped a new psychedelic track, “Bubblegum Dog,” accompanied by a nostalgic video. In the video, the duo escapes from a mysterious “bubblegum dog,” taking viewers on a trippy journey reminiscent of iconic ’90s rock videos.
During their psychedelic escapade, MGMT pays homage to legendary ’90s rock visuals, including references to Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today,” Stone Temple Pilots’ “Vasoline,” and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under The Bridge.”
“Bubblegum Dog” is part of MGMT’s upcoming album, “Loss Of Life,” which marks their fifth album and the first since parting ways with Columbia Records. The album, produced alongside Patrick Wimberly, is set to release early next year and features a collaboration with Christine And The Queens.
In a statement, MGMT expressed their pride in the album, stating, “All joking aside (never!), we are very proud of this album and the fact that it was a relatively painless birth after a lengthy gestation period, and are happy to be releasing this baby into the world with Mom + Pop. Musically speaking, we are running at around 20% adult contemporary and no more than this, please.”
